This course focuses on rifle and pistol combined use in defensive contexts. There are no pre-requisites as we will cover fundamentals, but you should not be brand new to guns.
Course Focus
- Pistol and rifle fundamentals
- Pistol–rifle transitions
- Movement, cover, and positional shooting
- Threat assessment and decision-making
- Accountability for every round fired
- We emphasize why techniques work, not just how to perform them.
What You’ll Train
Pistol
- Posture, grip, aiming, trigger management, and follow-through
- Draws from concealment (where range rules allow)
- Reloads and malfunction management
- Disadvantaged shooting
- Movement and use of cover
Rifle
- Zero confirmation and practical accuracy
- Sling use and rifle handling for defensive contexts
- Positional shooting (standing, kneeling, supported)
- Target discrimination and accountability
- Working around cover and obstacles
- Integration
- Pistol–rifle transitions
- Managing distance and problem-solving under pressure
- Context-driven decision making (not “shoot everything” drills)
Important Info
- Please arrive at least 20 minutes before the class starts. If you are late, we reserve the right to turn you away as a no-show.
- Bring a camp chair or stool.
- Bring note taking materials.
- You will need up to 300 rounds of FMJ ammo per gun.
- Keep your firearms in your vehicle until you receive instructions from a Range Safety Officer.
- Wear pants with a belt, sturdy athletic shoes or boots, and clothing that will allow you to be reasonably comfortable outdoors. Wear a hat with a bill. You are going to get dirty.
- Bring plenty of water and snacks – you will be outdoors all day.
- Bring a holster and mag carriers. If you want to run your everyday carry rig, do it. If you want to run your battle belt, do it. Minimum: Holster and 3 mags. Sling for rifle and at least 3 mags.
- If the weather is inclement, we WILL train. If the weather is dangerous, we delay. It’s Arizona, the weather changes in 10 minutes.
- The end time is flexible.
